Kind Regards from the South

APRIL 23 – 26, 2026
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN
CASA BELGRADO

Curated by: Mercedes Lozano

Curatorial text

Kind Regards from the South can be understood as a correspondence in which, instead of words, there are drawings, watercolors, earth as pictorial matter, and everyday scenes from what we call the South. The gathered images pause their gaze on Argentina and Chile — or Chile and Argentina — and perhaps even on other possible latitudes, through a selection measured by the closeness of the artists to Casa Belgrado, as part of a living community that the space has shaped over the course of its 12 years.

Within this framework of bonds and imaginations, the work of Lucía Sorans activates the earth as living and symbolic matter, putting memories and energies into circulation through the pictorial gesture. Pablo Cavallo’s series of watercolors investigates the dissociation between the photographic record and the resulting image, transforming everyday scenes into ambiguous atmospheres. In dialogue, the work of Jorge Caperan is configured as a visual diary, where the intimate and the mediated are intertwined in a transit between Chile and Argentina.

The works trace a cartography of the experience in the South through routes, materials, and everyday scenes — a vantage point from which to sustain other ways of looking at the world. Here, the South is not just a geography but a living network of bonds, displacements, and presences that find — and will continue to find — in Casa Belgrado a space from which to exercise practices of persistence.

Dear colleagues and guests, I hope this message finds you well.

Kind Regards from the South can be considered a correspondence in which, instead of words, there are drawings, watercolors, earth as pictorial matter, and sketches of everyday life in what we call the South. More specifically, one could say that the gathered images pause their gaze on Argentina and Chile, or Chile and Argentina, and perhaps even on other possible latitudes. The selection is measured by the closeness of the artists to Casa Belgrado, as part of a living community that the space has shaped over the course of its 12 years, where points of view intertwine to project and tension presents and futures from the South.

Within this framework of bonds and imaginations, the work of Lucía Sorans activates the earth as living and symbolic matter. Her pictorial gesture, in dialogue with the body and movement, puts into circulation memories and energies within a transforming telluric imaginary. The artist works with collected and processed soils as a pictorial element, putting them in relation to materials such as mica and glitter. Meanwhile, Pablo Cavallo’s series of watercolors investigates the dissociation between the photographic record and the resulting image. His works transform everyday scenes into ambiguous atmospheres in which the recognizable becomes uncertain, and memory oscillates between what is one’s own and what belongs to others. In dialogue, the work of Jorge Caperan is configured as a visual diary. His drawings start from photographs taken with his cell phone — especially during his time at Casa Belgrado — and articulate everyday scenes crossed by media images. In them appears a tension between the intimate and the mediated, in a transit between Chile and Argentina.

The works of Lucía Sorans, Pablo Cavallo, and Jorge Caperan trace a cartography of the experience in the South through routes, materials, and everyday scenes, serving as a vantage point from which to sustain other ways of looking at the world. Here, the experience of the South is not just a geography but a living network of bonds, displacements, and presences that find — and will continue to find — in Casa Belgrado a space from which to exercise practices of persistence.

Participating artists

Lucía Sorans

Visual Artist — Buenos Aires, Argentina

Lucía Sorans lives and works in Buenos Aires. Her practice brings together research on pictorial materiality and movement performance, exploring connections between body and territory. She works with soils collected from various Argentine geographies as pictorial material. Her work has been exhibited at Centro Cultural Recoleta, Fundación Cazadores, and Muntref, and has received awards including Premio Klemm 2025 and Premio Fondo Nacional del Salón Sor Josefa Díaz y Clucellas.

Artist statement

Earth as a material charged with events, symbols, histories, and stories — tied to the potency of life and death. Through the act of painting, the body sets the earth in motion to establish a connection with this matter and release the memories and energies contained within, through images that are not preconceived. Paintings as soils in which histories of transformation are stabilized and brought to the surface.

Pablo Cavallo

Visual Artist — Buenos Aires, Argentina

Pablo Cavallo (Buenos Aires, 1985) is a visual artist whose pictorial practice explores the construction of invented landscapes and atmospheres linked to memory. He holds a degree from the Universidad Nacional de las Artes (UNA) and deepened his research at the Programa de Artistas at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid) and has received recognition including the Premio Braque and Premio Fundación Andreani.

Artist statement

The series of watercolors presented here explores the dissociation between the photographic record and the resulting image. Through the materiality of watercolor, I translate fragments of urban infrastructure, domestic details, and peripheral horizons into atmospheres that oscillate between figuration and poetic abstraction. It is within this tension between technical capture and the subjectivity of color that my landscapes invite the observer to inhabit a memory that is, simultaneously, alien and their own.
